The Princeton duo of Maya Lawrence ’02, and Susannah Scanlan ’14 suited up for Team USA on Monday morning to take part in the individual women’s epee competition.
In the Round of 64, Scanlan came back from an early deficit to tie her match with Ukraine’s Olena Kryvystka at 8-8. But in a match that lasted over 21 minutes, Kryvystka went on to win 15-13.
Lawrence had a bye into the Round of 32, where she faced ninth-ranked Mara Navarria of Italy. After tying the match at 7-7, Lawrence went on to post a 15-12 victory and book her place in the Round of 16, where she would face another top-10 ranked Italian in Rossella Fiamingo.
Against Fiamingo, Lawrence fell behind 2-0, and then tied it at 2-2 before Fiamingo took a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period. Fiamingo built her lead to five touches after the second ended with her holding a 12-7 advantage. Fiamingo went on to record a 15-7 victory.
Scanlan and Lawrence will return to the Olympic strips on Saturday, Aug. 4 when they take part in the team epee competition.
